Dental Fillings

When you have a cavity, a chipped tooth, or misshapen teeth, a dental filling can repair the problem. Mainly, dental fillings repair tooth cavities, while a similar treatment—called an inlay or onlay—can enhance small imperfections in your smile.

While Middle Tennessee Prosthodontics has the motto of “excelling at the complex,” we also handle many more straightforward dental issues and offer general and cosmetic dentistry. Dental fillings are a common treatment we offer at our office in Brentwood.

How Do Dental Fillings Work?

Dental fillings are a restorative dentistry treatment that repairs the hole left behind when a cavity is removed. The filling material “fills” the hole to prevent further damage or decay to your tooth.

While there are different kinds of filling materials, composite resin and porcelain are the most common as they are tooth-colored. These materials are matched to the exact shade of your natural teeth. While metal fillings are still available, they aren’t nearly as common.

Our Dental Filling Services

At Middle Tennessee Prosthodontics, we provide a few dental fillings and related services. The first is traditional dental fillings. Then, we also offer inlays and onlays. Here’s what you need to know about these treatments.

Composite fillings act as a solution for problems such as tooth decay or cracks. A composite filling is a tooth-colored plastic and glass mixture used to restore decayed teeth. This procedure is also utilized for cosmetic improvements of the smile by fixing any discoloration or reshaping any disfigured teeth.

Most commonly, fillings are used to cover the small hole left behind when a cavity is removed.

Dental inlays and onlays are considered a conservative method of treating damaged teeth. They are used instead of placing a crown. Some dentists even use inlays and onlays to treat tooth decay.

Inlays are made of tooth-colored material such as porcelain or dental composite. They are bonded to your tooth to repair chips or cracks. They fit on the inside of the tooth between the cusps and are best for minor repairs.
Onlays, on the other hand, are performed with the same material but on the outside of the tooth around the cusps. Onlays usually cover a larger area than inlays.
