Sedation Dentistry

Do you often dread going to the dentist? Do you put off important dental treatments because you have dental anxiety? Sedation dentistry can help put you at ease.

We get it. Going to the dentist isn’t always at the top of your to-do list, even if you don’t really mind going. And, for some people, dental appointments can bring up feelings of stress and anxiety. At Middle Tennessee Prosthodontics, we want every patient to receive the vital dental care they need while feeling secure and heard. This is why we partner with dental anesthesiologists for patients who need them.

Sedation Dentistry Options

At Middle Tennessee Prosthodontics, we offer a couple of different options for sedation dentistry to help suit your needs and comfort level: both laughing gas and IV sedation from a local dental anesthesiologist. Here’s what you need to know about each.

Laughing gas is inhaled through a small mask on your nose before and during the length of your treatment. It’s a light sedative that doesn’t put you to sleep. Instead, you will feel more relaxed and often giddy or happy—hence the nickname “laughing” gas. This is a great option for patients who only have minimal to moderate anxieties about the dentist, and it’s also a great option for kids and teens.

With laughing gas, you’ll be back to normal within a minute or two after we turn the gas off. So, you can drive yourself from your appointment and resume your daily activities.

IV sedation is a deeper sedation than laughing gas, but you’ll still be conscious. You’ll receive an IV during the treatment which puts you into a heavily relaxed state while you remain responsive. You may fall asleep, but you can easily be woken up. You won’t be “put under.” We can also control the levels of sedation and will use a dental anesthesiologist.

IV sedation is best for patients with more intense fears around the dentist or for patients receiving more intensive treatments. With IV sedation, you’ll need someone to drive you to and from the appointment.

Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry is great for many patients! With sedation dentistry, you’ll feel more relaxed during your appointment, which makes them go much faster and more smoothly. You’re also less likely to put off dental care if you know you can relax.

Routine dental care is crucial to preventing painful problems like periodontal disease and tooth loss. So, routine visits actually make dentistry that much easier on you.
