Tooth Extractions

When you have a painful tooth, it can impact your daily life. You may notice the pain each day and night, and the symptoms can make it difficult to chew, eat, or even move your mouth. A tooth extraction may sometimes be your best option to relieve pain and restore your oral health.

At Middle Tennessee Prosthodontics, we are tooth replacement specialists.

Many times, to replace teeth and ensure a beautiful, functional smile, we have to start by removing damaged or decayed teeth. While we may not perform the surgery, we work extensively with surgeons to help complete your treatment with the final result in mind. If you have a tooth or teeth causing you problems, reach out today to request an appointment at our Brentwood office!

Why Do You Need a Tooth Extraction?

We take a conservative approach to restorative dentistry. Before extracting any teeth, we will explore other options, such as inlays, onlays, fillings, or dental crowns.

However, sometimes removing a tooth is the best way to restore both the look and function of your smile.

While we only recommend tooth extractions on a case-by-case basis after a consultation with one of our dentists, here are some situations where you may need a tooth extraction:

If your tooth is severely impacted, it can be quite painful and a removal may be necessary.

Sometimes your mouth isn’t big enough for all of your teeth. So, removing a tooth allows for orthodontic care and relieves uncomfortable symptoms.

While early stages of gum disease are easier to treat, advanced gum disease can cause loose, painful teeth. Removal may be needed.

Severe trauma can cause large cracks that can’t be fixed with onlays or inlays. In these situations, extracting the tooth is the best option.

If tooth decay can’t be resolved with a filling or root canal, taking out the tooth is the next step.

During your visit, we will determine if extracting a tooth or teeth is the best route to restore your dental health.

Occassionally if you have some teeth but not many functional teeth, we may recommend dentures or implant-supported dentures.

For dentures to be successful, no natural teeth can remain in the arch where dentures are placed. We will recommend tooth extractions in that case. After tooth extractions, we can often create a temporary denture the same or next day, so you have a functional smile during your restorative treatment.

During your visit, we will determine if extracting a tooth or teeth is the best route to restore your dental health.

Our Conservative Extraction Approach

Extractions are never our first recommendation or option. We will carefully evaluate your oral health and overall health before suggesting treatment. We will try to save your natural teeth before we recommend removal.

Removing your teeth may be what we suggest when your tooth or teeth are hindering your oral health and well-being. Otherwise, keeping your natural teeth is the best option because it supports your jaw health, your gum health, maintains the function of your smile, and prevents pain throughout your smile.

The Benefits of Extracting a Tooth

In some situations, removing a tooth is the healthiest choice for your smile. When a tooth is severely damaged, infected, or causing crowding, keeping it in place can lead to ongoing discomfort and additional oral health problems. A carefully planned tooth extraction, along with a restorative dentistry plan, can give you long-term comfort and stability, not just short-term relief.

  • Relieves Pain and Pressure: A tooth that is infected, cracked, or impacted can cause constant discomfort, swelling, or sensitivity. Removing the problem tooth often brings immediate relief and allows the surrounding tissue to heal.
  • Prevents Infection from Spreading: Severely decayed or damaged teeth can allow bacteria to spread to nearby teeth, gums, or even the jawbone. Extraction helps stop the infection and protects the rest of your oral health.
  • Improves Bite Comfort and Function: Loose, broken, or overcrowded teeth can make chewing difficult and may cause your bite to feel uneven. Removing the affected tooth allows your bite to be corrected with restorations that fit comfortably.
  • Creates Space for Restorative Treatment: In many cases, extractions are necessary before placing dentures, implant-supported restorations, or bridges. Removing unhealthy teeth makes it possible to design a stronger, more stable replacement.
  • Supports Long-Term Oral Health: Keeping a tooth that cannot be saved often leads to more complex problems later. Extraction allows us to move forward with a treatment plan that restores your smile’s strength, appearance, and overall health.

Our Process for Tooth Removal

At Middle Tennessee Prosthodontics, tooth extractions are never rushed. Even when removing a tooth is necessary, we carefully plan each step so your treatment supports your long-term comfort, oral health, and future restorations.

Because we specialize in rebuilding smiles, every extraction is done with the final result in mind. We also work closely with trusted oral surgeons when surgical removal is required, ensuring your care stays coordinated from start to finish.

Your visit begins with a detailed exam and digital imaging. We evaluate the condition of your tooth, your bite, your gum health, and your overall treatment goals. If the tooth can be saved, we will recommend conservative options first. If extraction is the best choice, we will explain why and how it fits into your long-term plan.

Before any tooth is removed, we plan what comes next. Whether you need a dental implant, bridge, denture, or implant-supported restoration, we design your treatment so your smile stays functional and comfortable after the extraction. This planning is especially important when multiple teeth need to be removed.

If your extraction requires surgical care, we coordinate with an experienced oral surgeon. We provide the surgeon with a detailed plan, so the tooth removal supports your future restoration, ensuring the best possible outcome.

On the day of your extraction, your comfort is a priority. Local anesthesia and sedation options may be used when appropriate to help you stay relaxed. The tooth is removed carefully to protect the surrounding bone and tissue whenever possible.

After the extraction, we monitor healing and prepare for the next step in your treatment. In some cases, temporary dentures or restorations can be placed quickly so you can continue eating, speaking, and smiling with confidence while your final restoration is being made.

Using Dental Sedation for a Better Experience

We understand that the idea of having a tooth removed can make some patients feel anxious or uneasy. That’s why we offer sedation dentistry options to help you stay relaxed during your tooth extraction and any related procedures. Sedation can make the experience much easier for any kind of dental procedure.

Our office offers different levels of sedation depending on your needs. Nitrous oxide can help you feel relaxed while still staying awake, while IV sedation may be recommended for longer or more involved procedures. Our team will review your medical history, comfort level, and treatment plan to determine the safest and most effective option for you.

Tooth Replacement Options

While it’s sometimes necessary to remove teeth, leaving an empty space in your mouth can cause further problems down the road. So, after a tooth extraction, we will find a restorative dentistry option to strengthen your mouth and enhance the appearance of your smile.

Our tooth replacement options include:

  • Dental Implants
  • Dental Bridges
  • Implant-Supported Bridges
  • Full-Arch Implant Bridges
  • Implant-Supported Dentures
  • Traditional Dentures

We will work with your budget and dental needs to find the right restorative dentistry plan for you in the Brentwood, TN, area.

How to Care For Your Smile Immediately After a Tooth Replacement

  • Protect the Extraction Site: Avoid touching the area with your fingers or tongue. Keeping the site undisturbed allows a blood clot to form, which is essential for proper healing. Disrupting the clot too soon can cause discomfort and delay recovery.
  • Follow Eating and Drinking Guidelines: Stick to soft foods for the first few days, such as yogurt, eggs, soup, or smoothies. Avoid very hot foods, crunchy snacks, or anything that could get stuck in the extraction area. Drinking through a straw should also be avoided, as the suction can interfere with healing.
  • Keep Your Mouth Clean Carefully: You should continue brushing and flossing your other teeth, but be gentle near the extraction site. After the first day, rinsing with warm salt water can help keep the area clean and reduce irritation.
  • Manage Swelling and Discomfort: Mild swelling or soreness is normal after a tooth extraction. Using a cold compress and taking any recommended medication as directed can help you stay comfortable while the area heals.
  • Attend Follow-Up Visits: Follow-up appointments allow us to check your healing and make sure you are ready for the next step in your treatment, such as a denture, bridge, or implant restoration.

Extra Recovery Instructions When Using Sedation Dentistry

If sedation dentistry was used during your extraction, you may need additional time to recover after your appointment. You should plan to have someone drive you home and stay with you for the rest of the day, especially if IV sedation was used.

It is normal to feel tired or groggy for several hours after sedation. Rest for the remainder of the day, avoid strenuous activity, and follow all medication instructions carefully. Do not drive, operate machinery, or make important decisions until the sedation has fully worn off.

Drinking plenty of water, eating light meals, and getting enough rest will help your body recover from both the extraction and the sedation. If you notice unusual swelling, prolonged bleeding, or discomfort that does not improve, contact our office so we can help.
